Governing Board

The New Hampshire Board of Acupuncture Licensing was initially appointed by Governor Jeanne Shaheen shortly after the signing of the acupuncture licensing law (RSA 328-G) on June 30, 1997.

The New Hampshire Board of Acupuncture Licensing (NHBAL) has five members: four licensed acupuncturists and one public member. Board members are appointed by the Governor, approved by the Executive Council and serve for three year terms. Board members are not compensated for their services, but do receive mileage reimbursement for Board-related travel.

The NHBAL is required to meet at least two times a year, but currently meets four times a year, usually in March, June, September and December. Meetings are held on Fridays from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the offices of the Department of Health and Human Services in Concord. Meetings are open to the public. If you are interested in attending please contact for the time and date of the next meeting.

One of the principle duties of the Board is the creation and enforcement of rules governing the practice of acupuncture in New Hampshire. The original Board spent two years writing the initial version of the acupuncture rules, which were approved by the legislature in the fall of 1999, paving the way for the approval of the first acupuncture licenses on November 5, 1999. Much of the Board's ongoing activity focuses on reviewing new license applications and license renewals, establishing policies and procedures for all aspects of licensing, and the upholding of ethical and professional standards.
