An Athletic Trainer is someone who is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in health care. Licensed Athletic Trainers work under the direction of licensed physicians and in cooperation with other allied health personnel function as an integral member of the health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs, hospitals and other health care settings.
Athletic trainers have, at minimum, a bachelor's degree, and seventy (70) percent of all ATC credential holders have a master's degree or higher. The educational content for Athletic Training Education Programs are as follows:

All persons who provide Athletic Training services In New Hampshire must be licensed by the Board.
- What are Licensure Qualifications?

A bachelor's degree at minimum, taking and passing a legally defensible national certification exam administered by the independent Board of Certification Inc. (BOCATC). BOCATC is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
- What is the Athletic Training Governing Board?

It is a state agency charged to regulate the practice of Athletic Training. The Board is responsible for protecting the health, safety and welfare of individuals who receive athletic training services in New Hampshire.
- What does the Athletic Training Governing Board do?

Members meet monthly to conduct Board business and:
- Develop policy and set standards of practice
- Review applications and issue licenses to qualified applicants
- Investigate complaints and take appropriate disciplinary action when violations are found to have occurred
- Monitor and enforce continued certification at the national level
- How is the Board organized?

The five-member Board is made up of:
- three licensed Athletic Trainers,
- one physician and
- one public member
appointed by the Governor.
- How does the Board monitor competency of licensees?

The Board requires that every licensee demonstrate proof of continued BOCATC certification, which requires continuing education in activities relating to development for the purpose, of updating and developing skills in order to provide appropriate athletic training services. To retain certification, ATC credential holders must obtain 75 hours of medically related continuing education credits every three years and adhere to a code of ethics.

- To determine whether the practitioner holds current license.
- If you feel the Athletic Trainer has behaved in an unprofessional manner.
- If you are dissatisfied with the Athletic Training services provided and have not received satisfaction after notifying the Athletic Trainer and/or the employer.
- If you want to know if a specific Athletic Trainer has had any disciplinary actions taken against him/her.
- If you have any questions regarding Athletic Training services.
- Can a licensed Athletic Trainer carry and administer Naloxone ("Narcan") while practicing as an Athletic Trainer?

In accordance with the law recently passed by the State of New Hampshire, RSA 318-B:15(c):
- "No health care professional who, acting in good faith and with reasonable care, prescribes, dispenses, or distributes an opioid antagonist directly or by standing order and no person who, acting in good faith and with reasonable care, stores, dispenses, or distributes an opioid antagonist or related drug overdose shall be subject to any criminal or civil liability, or any professional disciplinary action, for any action authorized by this paragraph or any outcome resulting from an action authorized by this paragraph."
- Can Athletic Trainers carry non-prescribed Epipens for emergency situations?

An Athletic Trainer can administer an Epipen if it is prescribed to an individual by a doctor's order.
