Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

As of December 9th, 2024, Midwifery licensees are required to use our new continuing educations tracking system, CE Broker. CE Broker provides free access to tools for tracking CE and finding approved courses. For more information and to set up your free account, please click here.

Is there a restriction on CE delivery methods (e.g., licensee can only take live courses)? At least 12 of the 20 hours shall be earned through participation in academic or other courses, unless the licensee seeks CE credit for publication of a book (in which case 8 of the 20 hours shall be through coursework).  Mid 405.01(c).

No

Continuing education courses, classes, seminars, workshops, or distance learning shall be given by an entity accredited by:

  • Midwives Education Accreditation Council;
  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools;
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges;
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools;
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities;
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools;
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges;
  • American College of Nurse-Midwives;
  • Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education;
  • National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission;
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation;
  • Commission on Continuing Education of the New Hampshire Nurses Association;
  • National Certification Corporation of Obstetrical, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing;
  • American Academy of Nurse Practitioners;
  • International Childbirth Education Association;
  • International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners;
  • National Board for Certified Counselors;
  • American Dietetic Association;
  • The American Association of Nurse Practitioners; or
  • Any other entity approved by the council.

Ways to earn CEs: Categories of CEs (Plc 905.02)
  • Completing an academic or other course, class, seminar, workshop, and distance learning in a midwifery-related field, as described in Mid 405.02.
    • 1 CE = 1 hour attended, maximum 12 CE for single course.
    • Shall be offered by accredited provider described in Mid 405.02(a).
  • Informal independent study, as described in Mid 405.03.
    • 1 CE = 2 hours of informal independent study, maximum 4 CE.
  • Publication of the midwife’s own writing, as described in Mid 405.04.
    • 12 CE for publication of a book, maximum 2 publications.
    • 4 CE for publication of a chapter of book or article, maximum 2 publications.
  • Public professional presentations, as described in Mid 405.05.
    • 2 CE = 1 hour of presentation, maximum 4 CE.  
    • May not receive credit more than once for repeat presentations.
  • Teaching midwifery, as described in Mid 405.06.
    • 2 CE = 1 hour of teaching, maximum 4 CE.
    • May not receive credit more than once for repeat classes taught.
  • Participating in a midwifery-related board, committee, or regulatory agency, as described in Mid 405.07.
    • 2 CE for each board, committee, or agency served, max 4 CE.
  • Product development, as described in Mid 405.08.
    • 4 CE for development of a product, maximum 4 CE.
