Licensing Requirements

Requirements for licensing by the Naturopathic Board of Examiners.

Naturopathic Doctor Initial License

  • Submit a naturopathic license application & pay the required license fee ($300)
  • Possess a good moral and professional reputation
  • Be physically and mentally fit to practice naturopathic medicine
  • Graduate from a naturopathic medical college that is accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education or another such accrediting agency recognized by the federal government or graduate from a foreign country naturopathic medical college that possesses equivalent qualifications.
  • Successfully complete the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX).

Naturopathic Doctor Renewal License

  • Submit a naturopathic license renewal application and pay the required license fee ($300)
  • Continuing Education (CE) must include a minimum of 45 hours in the previous 3 years. Of the 45 documented hours, 12 hours must be pharmacology/pharmacognosy.

Naturopathic Childbirth Initial Certification

  • Complete at least 100 hours of course work, internship or preceptorship in obstetrics or natural childbirth
  • Participate in 40 supervised births under the direct supervision of a licensed naturopathic, medical or osteopathic physician with specialty training in obstetrics or natural childbirth
  • Successfully pass the American College for Naturopathic Obstetricians (ACNO) examination

Naturopathic Childbirth Renewal Certification

  • Continuing Education (CE) must include a minimum of 45 hours in the previous 3 years. Of the 45 documented hours, 12 hours must be pharmacology/pharmacognosy. For those applying for a specialty license renewal, 12 of the 33 general CEs should be related to that specialty.

Acupuncture Specialty Initial Certification

  • Complete a program in acupuncture approved by the board that includes at least 500 hours of training in acupuncture including both didactic and clinical training.
  • Pass a specialty examination in acupuncture approved by the board.

  • Continuing Education (CE) must include a minimum of 45 hours in the previous 3 years. Of the 45 documented hours, 12 hours must be pharmacology/pharmacognosy.  For those applying for a specialty license renewal, 12 of the 33 general CEs should be related to that specialty.
