How to Upload your NBCOT Certificate

License Type: Occupational Therapist
CE Hours Total=24 hours
  • At least 12 hours shall relate directly to the clinical application of occupational therapy
  • Remaining hours shall relate to occupational therapy theory and practice
CE Cycle 2 years (corresponds with license timeframe)

Can CEs roll over? No
Is there a restriction on CE delivery methods (e.g., licensee can only take live courses)? No

  • Maintenance of NBCOT certification satisfies all CE requirements
Do courses need to be preapproved by the Board?

No

Ways to earn CEs: Categories of CEs 
  • Maintenance of current NBCOT certification, as further described in Occ 406.03;
    • Current certification=24 CE
  • Receipt of academic instruction and non-academic conferences, courses, and workshops in occupational therapy, as further described in Occ 406.04;
    • Academic coursework:  15 CE for each credit hour
    • AOTA approved programs:  # of CE credits awarded determined by provider
    • Non-AOTA approved programs:  1 CE= 1 hour of attendance
  • Facility-based in-service training, as further described in Occ 406.05;
    • 1 clock hour of attendance = 1 CE, max 8 CE per renewal cycle
  • Informal independent study, as further described in Occ 406.06;
    • 2 clock hour of study = 1 CE, max 4 CE per renewal cycle
  • Formal mentored independent study, as further described in Occ 406.07;
    • 2 clock hours of formal mentored independent study = 1 CE, max 4 CE per renewal cycle
  • Direct supervision of fieldwork, as further described in Occ 406.08;
    • 1 CE per student per week of supervision, when licensee is primary fieldwork instructor.  Max 14 CE per renewal cycle
  • Employer-required peer review activities, as further described in Occ 406.09;
    • 1 CE for each peer review activity,  max 4 CE
  • Publication of writing related to occupational therapy, as further described in Occ 406.10;
    • 1 Book = 12 CE, max 2 published writings per renewal cycle
    • 1 peer-reviewed chapter of a book or article = 6 CE, max 2 published writings per renewal cycle
    • 1 non peer-reviewed chapter or article = 4 CE, max 2 published writings per renewal cycle
  • Public professional presentations relating to occupational therapy, as further described in Occ 406.11
    • 1 clock hour of presentation = 2 CE, max 12 hours per renewal cycle.  Licensee cannot earn additional CE for repeat presentations
  • Participation in an occupational therapy research project, as further described in Occ 406.12;
    • 4 clock hours spent on a research project = 1 CE, max 8 CE per renewal cycle
  • Specialty certifications, as further described in Occ 406.13;
    • Initial AOTA Board Certification= 12 CE, max 12 CE
    • Preparation for Initial AOTA Specialty Certification= 1 CE for 4 hours of preparation, max 12 CE
    • Initial certification in neurodevelopmental therapy= 24 CE
    • Initial certification in hand therapy= 24 CE
  • Product development, as further described in Occ 406.14;
    • 4 CE for developing product, max 4 CE
  • Participation in the work of professional boards, committees and agencies, as further described in Occ 406.15;
    • Each board, committee, or agency served= 2 CE, max 4 CE per renewal cycle
  • CPR certification or recertification, as further described in Occ 406.16;
    • 1 CE for each clock hour spent preparing for certification or recertification, max 4 CE
  • Receipt of universal precaution education, as further described in Occ 406.17;
    • 1 CE for each clock hour spent in receipt of education, max 2 CE
